• Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R Black Series: Latest AMG Special Spotted Testing
  • Published: 27 October 2019

The all-conquering Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R is back and this time it comes in AMG Black Series specification. If you thought that the standard AMG GT R was lacking something then well, Mercedes-Benz appears to agree with you as recent spy images show the Black Series machine out in full testing livery.

Designed to sit above the ‘standard’ AMG GT R in the performance pecking order, the upcoming Black Series model looks set to capitalise on the success of the AMG GT R moniker and it represents a more dramatic step up to that of the rest of the range.

Whilst Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division is well versed at building performance powerhouses, the Black Series label adds another dimension to what are already potent road cars. Applied to the most hardcore variants, the AMG GT R Black Series takes heavy inspiration from the AMG GT GT3 race car which has been applied in successful fashion amongst GT Championships around the globe.

The news that a Black Series model is being readied ties into the motion that the AMG GT’s natural lifespan is coming to an end as Mercedes looks set to update the existing model range with a new member of the Mercedes family which is expected to arrive over the next couple of years. With two of the machines spotted on the recent test, the new AMG GT R Black Series machine appears to be a radically overhauled machine to that of its standard counterpart and it’s the bodywork that has seen the most changes.

All over the exterior surfaces are hints that this is going to be the most bonkers road-going AMG GT R yet. To the front and rear aprons, you have larger cut-outs and vents, whilst the bonnet also comes dresses in enlarged vents. More subtle tweaks are also here, however, it’s at the rear where things get interesting.

Replacing that plain and beautifully curved rear end is an enormous, and fixed rear wing. A new exhaust layout is also present here as is  new diffuser configuration. It’s clear that Mercedes-Benz has put some real effort in on this machine as it looks to wear the Black Series badge in devasting fashion.

From a power perspective, it’s expected that this new machine will deliver north of 700 bhp from a heavily modified V8 bi-turbo engine which is rumoured to benefit from forged internals, brand new camshafts and an all-new engine management system. Ensuring that all of this newfound power is useable, the AMG GT R is also expected to feature wider alloys which are said to come shod in a set of the latest Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2’s. Lower ride height and significantly uprated brakes complete a potent recipe.

More than just a road car, the GT R Black Series is going after track day glory and if anything like the below is to go by, Mercedes-Benz could be on to a winner. Whilst further details at this point are sketchy, expect the latest AMG GT family member to join it’s relatives early next year.
