Every so often something very special is offered up to us here at Premier GT and our latest acquisition was something we definitely couldn't pass up on. It gives us tremendous pleasure to offer to you this incredible Original UK Factory Build ‘one of only two in the world’ Carbon-Fibre Bodied AC Cobra 212 SC. With its title coming from its engine capacity in cubic inches and the 'SC' standing for 'Street/Competition' this 212 is the only right hand drive one in existence and comes with outstanding provenance.
Factory built back in 2000 at the Weybridge AC Factory this machine features a 3.5-litre 350bhp twin-turbocharged Lotus V8 engine, which is mated to a super lightweight, full carbon fibre body. This is truly a unique Factory Built AC Cobra stared at the British International Motorshow in October 2000 as the headliner on the AC stand. This is one of only two AC 212 S/C cars ever built. It is a unique Right Hand Drive Car with the other car being LHD and now in America. The car was featured on Top Gear in 2000 and this review can be found on You Tube. It also features in Jeremy Clarkson’s All Time Top 100 Cars and has been driven by Damon Hill, Mark Blundell and Tiff Needell for features in Car, Evo, Octane and Top Gear magazines. It was also the pace car for the first ever NASCAR race at Rockingham.
AC’s target with the 212 S/C was to dispense with the heavy cast iron Ford 427 engine and instead use a much lighter power unit to achieve a better balanced and a quicker car. The decision was to utilise the well proven Lotus Twin Turbo V8 which had seen plenty of service in the Esprit model range mated to a 6 speed close ratio Tremec gearbox. Combine this with the one piece carbon construction body and you have a remarkable 350BHP and just 900 Kgs. AC claimed that at the time it was the world’s fastest accelerating car and we have no reason to think otherwise. The performance is terrific and the soundtrack earth-shattering. As it drops to tick over, the thundering popping and banging exhaust note drops and most of the remaining soundtrack left is the turbo chargers whistling through the exhausts. Another interested fact is at the time the body was the world’s biggest one piece carbon construction ever made.
One of the charms of this muscle car is its pure rawness, however It still comes with a bespoke carbon fibre hard top that in our opinion adds to its already stunning appearance and it also has its wet weather equipment that slips into the boot should the roof be removed and left in the garage. The interior features one of the first ever all Alcantara interiors that includes the dash and it also comes with a full intercom system, featuring headsets and microphones for those noisy roof off spirited drives or track days allowing you to chat quite happily with your passenger.
As you would expect of a car of this significance, it comes with a fully documented history which contains its original build information and press cuttings.
The car is in outstanding condition having belonged for the last 6 years to a highly fastidious collector. In his quest as always to ensure his cars are in top order, works have included a service by Bell & Colvill Lotus which included a cam belt change. New tyres all round. New catalytic converters custom made for the two exhausts. A total Tremec gearbox overhaul by Gantspeed Engineering (one of the UK’s foremost race and rally transmissions specialists) completes the set-up to ensure the car is in perfect driving order, on the button and ready to go! It has covered a mere 22,000 miles in 18 years.
This is a truly special piece of AC motor car history.
You could possibly argue that this car could almost be a holy grail item for collectors of this model. It is literally one of a kind.
