Description
De Tomaso has a number of models to its name but nothing says “De Tomaso” quite like its most popular model, the Pantera. Debuting in Modena in March 1970, it was only available in the U.S. between 1971 and 1974 and was the joint effort of Ford and De Tomaso to replace the Shelby Cobra and rival the Chevrolet Corvette and Ferrari Dino. DeTomaso continued the Pantera without the help of ford until 1991, but it's the early examples that people remember most.
The Pantera was to be instrumental in propelling De Tomaso from eccentric, niche producer to a fully-fledged, high-volume supercar brand. But more than this, it also challenged the car conventions of the day with its striking looks, unibody construction, mid-engine layout, American V8 performance and relatively affordable price tag. The cult of the Pantera is still as strong today as ever and well-maintained examples have a record of fetching high prices on the auction stand.
So, we are excited to present for sale this stunning 1972 De Tomaso Pantera, that was meticulously restored in 2001 and was a show-winning car at almost every show it attended. It was built in Modena in January 1972 and was then imported to the USA in June of 1972. It was imported into the UK in 2008 by its second owner and its history has been meticulously well-documented and will be passed on to the new owner to continue. The odometer reads 10,965 miles and since its arrival in the UK in 2008, it has covered a mere 284 miles.
With a wide and low stance, a nose that curves towards the ground in a graceful arch from the heavily-slanted windscreen, and quad exhausts, there is no denying the Pantera’s Italian good looks. But aesthetics aside, one of its most attractive attributes has to be that rear-mid-engined, RWD layout with its Ford V8, plucked directly from the Mustang assembly line. This makes the Pantera capable of 0-60 mph in around 5.5. seconds with a top speed of 159 mph.
The exterior is finished in Black and complemented by the White “Pantera” Side Decals and Silver-painted GT4 Campagnola Wheels. The bodywork has been uprated to Group 4 LeMans specification which involved the rolling of the wheel arches, to accommodate those incredible GT4 Wheels which at the rear, sit at 15.35 inches wide. The interior is Black Half Leather Half Suede with Red piping and Red & White “De Tomaso” Embroidery on both headrests. The glass panel between the cabin and engine bay means that wonderful engine can be observed in action. For a car from the 70s, the inside of the Pantera is relatively luxurious – air conditioning and electric windows came as standard. There is a gated shifter, a dash with a plethora of gauges and a relatively large amount of storage space.
This particular Pantera has undergone some extensive automotive engineering and as a result, has been fitted with the following parts which inhabits that superb engine bay; a Full MSD Ignition system with leads, a Custom 760 Holley carburettor, a Performance Centerforce clutch, NASCAR oiling system, Special Crane Roller Hydraulic Camshaft & followers, Hamburger aluminium sump pan, Ceramic Coated Big Throat performance headers, Full Serpentine Belt Drive, Braided Stainless Steel hoses, a Cross Flow Radiator with uprated dual cooling fans, Stainless Steel Water & Header Tanks, Billet Alloy Pantera Air Cleaner.
Cog-swapping in this car is made easy by the 5-speed original ZF trans-axle gearbox with LSD, that is an original Ford GT40 specification gearbox, but in the Pantera is mounted upside down. Stopping power comes in the form of JKZ modified Billey Alloy 4-pot brakes paired up with vented Corvette discs and a Pro-Performance Power Booster.
The Pantera is a cult classic with a huge army of fans. With its well-documented history and fantastic condition both inside and out, this car is sure to prove an incredible investment, not to mention a very fun one, and we are absolutely thrilled to be able to offer this example.
